What is bonus share and its record date?

Bonus shares are free shares issued by the company to its existing share holders. Bonus shares are issued in a ratio of the shares an investor hold. For example when a company offers 1:5 bonus shares, it means a share holder will get 1 free share for 5 shares. So if an investor holds 100 shares at the time of bonus then they will become 120 shares.

Bonus shares are usually announced by the company with a record date, the date which is considered for the bonus shares. All the investors holding the shares on the record date are eligible for bonus shares.

Company usually gives bonus shares as a substitute of dividend payouts.

The face value of the share doesn't get change after bonus. This is unlike stock split.

Bonus shares increases the number of shares in the market which changes the Earning Per Share EPS (companies net profit / number of shares). As net profit is still remain same and the numbers of shares are higher, shares EPS goes down after the bonus shares are issued.

Ideally it should reduce the share price but it doesn’t happen in the ratio of shares are offered as bonus shares thus it usually in the profit of the share holders. This happens because of increase in liquidity of the share and signal of company’s promise to share its profit with its investors.

I had 50 shares of rural electrification corporation for which a bonus of 1:1 was announced. Record date was 11 aug 2016. But nothing happened at that date. I sold those shares on 25 august. Now on 28 September, the share price has gone down to 50%. I suppose share bonus has been implemented. Will I be getting the bonus shares now???

I had 70 shares of HPCL.I sold 5 shares on 15/09/2016 (Record Date).Only130 shares of HPCL have alloted as bonus share. My DP A/C debited 5 shares after market Hrs.I think as there no time mentioned on R/Date hence I should be alloted 140 shares.

I have purchased 5 HPCL Shares on 12th September for 1199 each (At 3:28 pm). Previously till 12th I had 15 Shares,I got notification stating 30 Bonus shares are credited. Bonus should be 40 shares, have not got the bonus for shares purchased on 12 Sep

you will get money refund or bonus share even if one purchase on record date delivery should settled one will bonus or money refund

Total shares you have is 15+5 = 20 shares. HPCL issue was 2:1 i.e., for 2 shares 1 share. Therefore 20 divided by 2 = 10. Now 20+10 = 30 shares. Enjoy.

Techmahindra issued 1:1 Bonus and stock split in ratio 10:5 and record date fixed is 20th march and 19th march, 2015.respectively. The shares are now trading at ex bonus /ex split price of say 1/4th price or near about. But the actual share transfer is not done so far. Any body can throw light on how much time ia taken to transfer shares after the record date or I should wait for two /three days before seeking clarification on the subject.
