If you are satisfied with your MF/Portfolio return then you should not get deviated. You have already made decent 19% CAGR over 7 years and you have compounded your money very well. Now you should let your money compound and let the 8th wonder of world work for you. You can rebalance your portfolio, switch between companies of MF based on change in performance of quality of fund but you should not pull out money from already made investment to try luck in IPO. You can always book profit, shift that money towards better investment opportunities but don't try luck with that money.

It's just beginning of the next bull run and if you get out of your investment then you are going to miss opportunities. IPO or Buyback is too much crowded now because of increased awareness among public and easy money in few days based on GMP. You can apply in good qualities IPO at good valuation with excess fund when opportunities come like Medanta, Mankind where your allotment chances are higher with less crowd and quality of business, financial and valuation are decent.

As You are a CA , I need to be very careful before writing anything
A Person Cannot be Perfect , At the Most He can Be a CA

I personally think You are a Long term Compounder and have good Patience to hold Securities and Related Instruments.

As you are Earning around 24-26 % ( Absolute Return ) p.a in MF, Its a good return , No doubt about it

But My Take would be To Do what you were doing Earlier

1.SEBI is Taking strong Steps towards Quick Listings and Efficiency in Primary Markets especially IPO's

2.IPO's the same return in Approx a week which MF's give annually ( On Absolute basis)
What you can do is try to cut the time you spend on Formalities like Checking Allotment

" IPO Debit is the only debit message where we get happiness." For Me Credit in Bank A/c and Debit of IPO Allotment are happier movements than any other message on my phone
Don't go for Checking Allotment for all the Accounts instead wait for Debit message
Your much time will be saved and no sadness of seeing NOT ALLOTTED

3.About Research on the company
"उसके लिए हम बैठे हैं "
You just go through Research done by many seniors and integrate your CA mindset and apply . Or just See Ratios , PE scope left on table , GMP , and Quality of Management

That's enough for applying for Listing gains

4.I would recommend to not Hold IPO's post listing , Can Research on them properly then invest for Long term
See all the recent listed multibaggers like
Venus Pipes , Hariom Pipes , Kaynes Tech ,Anand Rathi , MTAR all gave chances at discounts
See Venus listed at only 2% premium
MTAR came till 1550 , Avalon went 20% below issue price
So it's not always necessary to Hold A good company post listing

5.About Managing Funds I am Not a Right person to comment on this ,

Be Choosy , Don't pick everything

I am also CA by profession.

According to me for Professionals like CA, Doctor who has hardly spare time, should invest majority in MF. now a days CA being financially literate can focus on some blue-chip stocks. for Midcap and smallcap better to play through MF, rather then going stock specific.

Some liquid funds like FD for emergency exp is very important.

now a days ipo are subscriped in 2 clicks through net banking or asba online....chittorgarh is such wonderful platform for professionals like us to review and apply...

so according to me, one should keeps their eggs in different basket, rather then only mf for exponential growth...and waana share that india is growth story and under leadership of Modi we will achieve great heights in next 10 years...just wait & watch.

1. you told sir that now a days IPOs are subscribed in 2 clicks, but for 2 clicks we have to study, manage funds,check allotment,sale of allotment and all this takes a lot of time and energy .And after that all efforts.... my 3 years IPO journery's return is not more than ( actually less than) MF returns
2. I believe in india growth story ,but investing through MF is an indirect way to invest in equtiy so , for MF vis -a -vis equity ,basket is not differnet

Other big expenses like marriage, car, house, I can manage with the funds I have.

​@Always Be positive In my opinion ,this is not the RIGHT way to calculte return which you mensioned 32%, this is totally misleading, how much money you blocked to earn 25 % return in IPO, for example you park /maintian 100 Rs in All saving bank accounts of your family members and by this you apply for IPO 5 applications of Rs 20 each , and out of 5 application you got 1 allotment of Rs 20 (although you will not get 1 allotment all the time) and on this 20 Rs. you get return of 25% i.e. Rs. 5 so your total return for this particular IPO is Rs, 5 + Rs 7 (7% SB interest on Rs 100,although after getting allotment you will receive interest on 80 Rs, only)=12%

@Monisha ji, you have started a very interesting and thought provoking debate. In fact, i broadly follow your model for investments. My bulk of funds are invested in MFs and some good stocks. Have some liquid money to play around with IPOs, and if big fall comes in market, then invest some more out of these in MFs or stocks. It keeps me busy also and enjoy the thrill of occasional profits in IPOs. Not calculated my profits exactly, but must be similar to yours. After 2024, presuming, Modi returns to power, share market and MFs are expected to give bumper returns. My next bet is on PSU stocks from 24 to 29 for multifold returns. The indication is already there, if somebody can read through. I keep about 80% capital in MFs or stocks and and rest 20% to play around in IPOs, which also serves the purpose of liquid money. Hope, you got my point. Thank you🙏

​@Trueinfo I think that taking time ,effort ,energy and loss of Opportunity into consideration , Applying in IPO is not a very attractive instrument now , but yes , this is like TADKA of DAAL ( IPO) but you should have DAAL ( Big Base of MF or Stocks ) first for TADKA

My two cents, I understand you have a clear financial goals in place. Why not consider your existing mutual fund investment as base for stability to your portfolio and keep on applying for good companies with huge listing gains?

Based on your past allotment experience in IPOs I understand that there were not many high listing allotments. In the game of probability and luck this can change anytime. Have your considered that multiple allotments possible in your 11 applications anytime( I know it's lottery/chances)
What I believe is such allotments in future will give a good boost to your overall portfolio. Occasional few such allotments makes a difference.

That too with 11 application the chances are still good but only the concerning factor is the time you spend in applying/ tracking etc.

So my humble suggestion is : with already existing proper financial backup inplace through past MFs investment you shall carry on with the IPOs. But you can plan something on the time management front. Factors like reduction in unblock cycle may help.

You can test this for a fixed time from now. Can be a year or many based on your patience level. Still if your feel the time spent and returns obtained on this IPOs are not worth it then please add the corpus to Mutual funds and enjoy the ride. If you are good with <20% CAGR on your investment this is the way and for anything extra on top of this IPOs is one of the safest way with your kinda corpus.

Consider these and decide from your past investment experience:
1.think of what percentage return you expect in overall portfolio ( no offence but if you are ok with 19% cagr this question wouldn't have existed)
2.time you're willing to spent ( smarten your ways)
3.your corpus available and risk vs reward
Then choose and stick to it with conviction. You can always review if your method works in few years timeframe and market is generous enough to always provide us with opportunities.

​@Bullrunner  here discussion /debate is of MF vs IPO considering return and time spent on both the products. Discussion of STCG/LTCG is of no use because STCG/LTCG both are applicable in MF as well as on IPO

​@Monisha In ipo you have to pay every time tex when you sell allotted shares. So return will affected significantly lower side. In mf generally investors make long term bet. So less tex liabilities then ipoes. And return cagr will increase.

I have very different way of writing looking into my age and experience of bad and good days. CAs are the professional who have vast knowledge to manage funds for the best return. I am not so competent to discuss with you in so details as you have the best knowledge and your capacity to invest. It will be like beating the bush. I belive in some quotes by some prominent persons, learned personalities and our God As well as Goddesses. Some to quote :

The share market is unpredictable. I have witnessed it below 1000 pts to 67000 pts in BSE.

IPO returns can never match Mutual fund/equity return over a long period. So its a foolishness to go overboard in IPO... Your data is for last 3 years, now IPO returns will fall even more as no of applicants have increased exponentially...

Thing is that, the concept is wrong
Use only that money in IPO, which would remain as cash if there is no ipo. Only free money that cannot be invested in MF or any other place should only be used in IPO
So that it can give you some alpha over bank rerurn/FD....... Keeping money spare for IPO if you can invest it in marker doesnot makes sense. Hope you understand the point here

Free money means --- most of us are not 100% into equity all the time, we stay 5-20%( ratio depend on person to person) in cash to take benefit of any crash/dip/opportunity/new buying

We cannot put this money in MF/equity as also need money for market corrections. This money only earn saving interest, putting this in IPO means getting alpha on the money which was supposed to be in cash only and cant be put in equity all the time, thats why i call it free money....

Market is at all time high so i am 20% in cash right now ( for any crash dip buying if it comes), i am using this for IPO.

When marker will fall, i will move this in MF/equity, till then i will apply IPO with this. This way my risk is also managed in equity and free cash is also being used
And there is no issue of getting lower return in IPO over MF

80% of PF is in Equity/MF and earning 30% cagr.

Answer to the question 'why IPOs, secondary markets and not mutual funds' is fairly straight forward. Because I believe we are capable of generating similar (or better) returns without depending on MF managers or PMS managers. It's also about financial independence, liquidity and control over your hard earned money.
There have been opportunities during the recent bull run where one could have liquidated MFs and made substantially higher gains from IPO allotments (SMEs in particular). There will be similar opportunities in the immediate future.
Indian capital markets are on a multi year bull run which has given rise activist type of investors (our own @MRavichandran  for example). Also, I have high regard for members who seem to have no financial background (@Noorul @lokes  to name a few) , but who are good at analysing a company as a business rather than just analysing it's financials.
To conclude, mutual funds, Portfolio Management schemes etc are for amateur investors. @Monisha Lack of time to manage one's own finances should not be an excuse for a person with a financial background

if after 8 days you give cheque to some body having amount of 25001 , then shole 10 lakh fd will be broken by bank for just 1 rs short.so you will get int of 8 days only for 10 lakh.which is almost same as SAVINGS.{ SOME BANKS ARE BREAKING FD IN MULTIPLE OF 1000 RS WHICH IS OF GREAT BENEFIT }

ONE MORE THING IF ITS LESS THEN SEVEN DAYS THEN THERE IS NO INT ON FD, IN THIS CASE YOU ARE LOSING INT OF SAVINGS ACCOUNT ALSO.

NOW BEST POSSIBLE SOLUTION, WHICH I AM DOING SINCE LAST 35 YEARS.

GET OVERDRAFT AGAINST FD.

BANK WILL GIVE YOU 75 % TO 90 % DRAWING POWER AGAINST YOUR FD AMOUNT.

THEY WILL CHARGE 0.5 % TO 2 % MORE INTEREST THAN YOUR FDR INTEREST.

YOU HAVE TO PAY INTEREST FOR NO OF DAYS YOU UTILISE THE AMOUNT.

ONE MORE THING IF ITS LESS THEN SEVEN DAYS THEN THERE IS NO INT ON FD, IN THIS CASE YOU ARE LOSING INT OF SAVINGS ACCOUNT ALSO.

NOW BEST POSSIBLE SOLUTION, WHICH I AM DOING SINCE LAST 35 YEARS.

GET OVERDRAFT AGAINST FD.

BANK WILL GIVE YOU 75 % TO 90 % DRAWING POWER AGAINST YOUR FD AMOUNT.

THEY WILL CHARGE 0.5 % TO 2 % MORE INTEREST THAN YOUR FDR INTEREST.

YOU HAVE TO PAY INTEREST FOR NO OF DAYS YOU UTILISE THE AMOUNT.

SO IF YOUR MONEY IS RELEASED AT 11.55 PM AFTER NON ALLOTMENT YOU CAN TRANSFER THE MONEY FROM SAVINGS TO OVERDRAFT ACCOUNT AT 11.59 PM AND CAN SAVE INTEREST FOR 1 DAY.

​@Monisha for balanced approach, both should be done and tried in my view....in mutual funds also, its not like all mf are giving such great returns and its not like all are getting good ipo allotment, little bit luck needed both places for good returns so its not good to put all money in mf only or keeping all in bank only for applying ipos plus shares investing....everything should be done by dividing amount as per his savings/assets......yes now a days, there is too high competition in ipos so lesser allotments/returns here but getting 6-7% in bank also good enough if we can make around 10-12% return from ipos using that money so total around 18%.... [as informed already , some luck is needed for both ipo and mf for such 18-20% per annum returns]

My two bits... IPOs always manifest themselves as a season... the current one has been an exceptionally long one hence more opportunities. Like all markets demand supply will balance at some point.
Luck plays a very important part. While statistics may ensure you get your probable FAIR share of allotments in the long run LUCK will decide the companies you get allotments and therefore the ACTUAL % gain on your employed capital. Over & above the KICK of receiving a allotment is second to none.

My theory : When mangoes are in season enjoy the aamras.. :)

This is first time I am reacting to your post. I was disappointed when I read, "As you are a CA, I need to be very careful before writing anything".
I have seen you very careful while writing posts. But only to be careful towards CA, why so? Not to be careful towards Graduates or less educated people of this forum.
I am simply a Graduate but a human being. I may be wrong according your views. It is not necessary all the times that highly-qualified persons only are always great. Here I may like to share an incident of Mr. Rituj Chaudhary, an IIT Manipur student of 2nd year and resident of Bihar. He hacked Google for 53 seconds. Officers and Engineers from Google held a meeting in USA for 12 hours but couldn't find the solution. He re started and informed the Google their mistake.
He was not having passport. Google immediately hired him and arranged passport in three days through Govt. and he was taken to USA by a special flight. He was offered a very high salary also. I read this story some where in social media. It may be wrong also. Hacking Google may be illegal. But a positive approach by Google.
So my request only,
"DON'T UNDER ESTIMATE THE POWER OF LESS EDUCATED PEOPLE". Talent is always a talent.

​@Monisha I have gone through your views and comments by others in 2-3 minutes and IMO find the solution as under as my opinion because i am also belongs to the same professional and I started my journey in mutual funds in 2019 and by investing lumpsum as and when suits to me and having CAGR appx 20 % as of now and the amount is very large . Though I also applied in IPO since 1990 by investing 10 DEMATS accounts of family members in BHNI categories as explained by you in your case along with SMEs and during last two years my return including saving bank account interest is appx 24% and this is all matter of luck and I used to sell all allotted stock on the very same day of listing. So there is no directly relation with investment in MF and IPO but journey of both leads to same way if decision taken on timely.
If you can share your data in % then it can be further discussed like as under
% of MF ( Breakup of LARGE /MID/SMALL/ ) if possible funds name wise
% of shares
% of IPOS FUND

If you are not happy with doing some thing just don't do it.

I am sure you have much more to achieve in your profession and greater heights to scale.
Money is not everything in life. Spent quality time with family and friends and enjoy life. That is more important.
Work life balance is very important in life. We already are working in one profession and then share market investment turns out to be another profession as that also eats up some of our time.
If you are already earning very good returns from mutual fund then why even think of going through the pain of applying for an ipo through 11 accounts where allotment is pure luck. Your mutual fund returns are 7x in 15 years which is mind blowing. If I were in your shoes I will continue to do which is giving me good returns and not wander here and there. As a CA professional you already mentioned that your time is more valuable. People like me can afford to spend time in research, analysis, applying IPOs, checking allotments etc as we can affort that time. But in your case you are in a very good profession and also earning good (if not hefty) returns from mutual fund. Then why bother to look here are there.
There are members in this forum who have not got allotment for years. And there is people on the other end of the pyramid who regularly get IPOs that too is bumper ones. So the people who are very lucky will continue to invest in IPO as they are going to get good returns.

1st point. Do compare your return in mutual funds to passive index funds. Assuming investment is done on same day
As far as IPO investment is concerned it has to be compared with single stock investment. If you want to compare a pool then compare it with another pool like index
2nd point is past returns are no indicator for future return either for mutual funds or index funds on long term basis
3rdly IPO returns are mostly on day 1 to day 5 outbeating index then they will fall below index on long term basis. IPO is a strong caffine kick which shakes you up unlike not so worthwhile talking return over 2 week period

Choice is yours. Your poor record in bHNI allotments surprises me. It should have been higher

Hello! What a great discussion it was.
What I think personally is, suppose if anyone have ₹3-crore (as you already have liquid fund of 2 cr for applying in IPOs.) Considering 15% returns p.a., one should get ₹45L in return.
For this, either you can invest all in MFs.
Or
1.5 Cr in MF. Return will be ₹22.5L.
and with another 1.5cr, if we apply in IPOs (Both Mainboard and SME), considering 20% listing gain for HNI Mainboard and 50% for SMEs, one should get at least 15 allotments in Mainboard IPOs and 30 allotments in SMEs.
₹40000*15 + ₹60000*30 = ₹24 Lakhs.
(20% of sHNI = ₹40000 and 50% of SME i.e ₹120000 on an average = ₹60000)

Now, considering any SME IPO subscribes 120 times, the allotment chances are very-very high (considering single application has to be made of 1.5cr). So, 30 Allotments are not that tough.
But again, right now market is majorly single directional, hence we are seeing large number of IPOs. If market will go down, less IPOs will come, but obviously less return in MF also then.

So in the end, it always comes down to the priority, peace of mind in MFs or thrill and chances of having more returns in IPOs. If you apply in IPOs, you can use that funds for OFS also for some additional gain.

​@Asoke sarkar If you are a disciplined investor, mutual fund investment will provide you moderate kind of experience. However, if you simply want to grow your money and not bother a lot with daily market movements, monthly SIPs through MF is the best option. You may not get euphoric feeling the way you get when you apply in IPOs but your objective of growing your wealth will be met.
In one word... mutual fund is SUPERB.
I have almost my entire investments in Mutual Funds since last 15 years.

You told you have invested in mutual fund, it has grown 7 times... how much money did you invest. 5000rs, 10000 rs.. or 1 crore.. if it's 1 crore you would have been a millionaire by this time..

Did you make any further investment recently in mutual funds..and what happened to that investment?

You have not answered my question. However your answer shows that you didn't have any different experience/feelings in the initial years say first five years. So you say that yours is a homogeneous experience/feelings as rosy as now.
But the fact is not that . In your initial 5 years may be1/ 2009 to 3/ 2014 , MF has given very insignificant return (may be in the range of 0 to 15%) in the whole 5years.
So, experience at that time period was very very gloomy unlike subsequent rosy experience. A person who was with this investment at that time can't forget this dark period.
You are to understand the difference between a Vanijya and investment. IPO/trading in share is a Vanijya. Our forefathers narrated " Vanijye Basati Lakshmi " .They have not told "Niveshe Basati Lakshmi "
Make money in Vanijya and then the question of investment comes. servant' s /professional's limited income is a different issue.
So, you are set to eliminate the conception of vanijya with altogether wrong calculation.
Conclusion:
IPO is IPO, share trading is share trading, long term investment is long term investment and MF is MF.
A man can do any to all according to his ability and convenience.

4 Jupitor ke SHNI mile
List kafi badi hai pr in 2 ipo se hi muje FD ek saal me jitna return deti utna maine kama liya. ( mai risky ipo kbhi nhi lgata 2017 se IPO laga rha aj tk mere sirf 2 IPO negative open hue hai SBI cards aur Aatmaj healt care )
