Who issue ISIN number?

In India, the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) assigns ISINs for securities, while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) assigns >ISIN codes for government securities.

ISINs are 12-character alphanumeric codes that identify financial instruments. An ISIN is mandatory for all securities that are traded or need to be identified in the financial markets.

ISIN consists of:

  • A two-letter country code from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • A special "XS" code for international securities cleared through pan-European systems.
  • A nine-digit National Securities Identifying Number (NSIN).
  • A single check digit.
