What is Grey Market and GMP?

Explanation of Grey Market and GMP in simple terms:

  • Grey Market is an unofficial market for the Pre IPO.
  • GMP is the premium per share.
  • Kostak is the premium per application.
  • Sub2 or Sub2Sauda is the premium for the allotted application.
  • As GMP is unofficial, thus there are no regulatory bodies (rules and regulations) involved.
  • All transaction for GMP is done in cash.
  • There is no written communication for Grey Market. Small slips of paper is the contract.
  • There is no official dealer. All buying and selling is through word of mouth and trust only.
  • The higher GMP means a higher possibility of IPO getting listed at a bumper price.
  • Fire Rating of a IPO is the measure of how popular is the IPO in terms of expected return.
  • GMP activity can start before the price band announcement.

FAQs

This is the growing concern of many SME IPO investors that even though applied in many SME IPOs but have not got a single allotment. Are we doing something wrong? Do we need to use any other process to apply in SME IPO? To understand it, let's discuss this with a simple example.

Assume ABC Company SME IPO figures

  • SME IPO Issue Size: 20 Cr
  • 50% HNI and 50% Retail quota
  • Lot Size: approx 1200 shares
  • IPO Price: Rs 100
  • 1 Retail Application amount: Rs 1,20,000

With the above example for Rs 20 Cr IPO

  • Total Lots: 1666 (Approx)
  • Retail: 833 (1 lot application)
  • HNI: 416 (2 lots application)

It means, only 833 retail investor applications and 416 HNI applications are to be selected. With this one can understand why the probability of getting SME IPO is low. In conclusion, the size of SME IPO is very small and lot size is very big (1200 shares) so the numbers of allottees will be very less.

Whereas in Mainboard IPO, it is the complete opposite of SME IPO. Size of IPO is big and Lot Size is small (1000), So the numbers of allottees are much higher.

Second point to consider, is the number of times the IPO oversubscribe which contributes to the probability of getting an IPO allotment.

GMP is traded over the counter through GMP dealers. The GMP seller only means that there is no buyer in the GMP market. This is similar to the lower circuit where there are sellers but no buyers. This situation can be caused by low IPO subscription, overselling, or negative market sentiment. This means that the listing can be at par or below the GMP price. One should consider this as a negative point.

This scenario may be temporary and may change before the day of listing. Therefore, one should always check the fundamentals and business model of the company before applying.

For every seller, there must be a buyer in the market. The same is true in the GMP market. But at some point, there are only buyers and no sellers. In the stock market, we call this the upper circuit. The same thing can happen in the GMP market if no investor is willing to sell their application. They expect a better return on the day of listing or want to hold it for a long time. One should consider this as a positive point.

I am frustrated with applying for IPOs. Could corruption be involved in the process? I don''t understand why I am not getting allocated even when I apply from two different accounts. Some companies are holding onto funds for extended periods. Is there no policy in place to release funds if the IPO is not allotted?"

Can please you also include Lot Size in the table

I have applied in most of IPO during last 9 months 2 BHNI application each but no allotment. Actually this is due to SEBI. Due to their twisted thinking they have made manipulations more attractive. The rule of 14 lot allotment is unfair it should be 1-2 lots so more applicants will get atleast something. I feel if all who are not getting allotment start writing to SEBI Chairperson, She may consider some amendment. I hope you all will agree and create some awakening in the minds of those who pass Tuglaki Farman.

I have applied for the last 25 IPOs in both retail, sHNI, and bHNI categories but not a single piece of luck. WIth luck playing very high role in allotment and with no luck at all by my side, I am going to stop applying in IPOs.

There seems to be a big scam going on for high profile IPOs and SMEs.
Not heard any known person getting allotment for the good IPOs.

I agree with your point. This looks like scam or insiders only purchase the IPOs.
I do have applied for many IPOs, but not even a single time.
Particularly, SME IPOs common public wont get i think.

For me also same. I applied in atleast 30 IPO with 3 diffrent account. Means altogether 90. I just got 2 allotmanat one in Tata Tech and other name I dont remember(that was loss)
295.5. Tortoise Mar 21 2024 10:58:15 AM
Guys.. The subscription was 300 times.. That''s like saying, one in 300 ppl will get allotment.. Or a better way, if you apply for 300 IPOs, then you will get only in one of them. So, yes, we need a lot of luck before we get one.

Dear Chittorgarh team,
GMP is showing as 40-50% when IPO starts and by listing day, it becomes 0. This seems to be a scam. Please follow due diligence in quoting GMP, as some of us apply in IPOs based on your established credentials and reputation.
Furthermore, allotment procedure of SME IPOs is a big scam. If members can please throw some light on it.

Sir, IPO is for all Indians, so no differance between north and south.
290.2. anonymous Feb 02 2024 12:00:14 PM
yes there is a secret, we have multiple accounts with different PAN , so in a way, we have higher probability to get selected , since we apply more applications
290.3. Someone Feb 02 2024 08:15:04 PM
Bro that's false. I applied nearly 60 times and got nothing. And I am North Indian.
290.4. Vinay Jain Feb 03 2024 10:29:13 AM
As lot size is really big for SME, number of applicant get allotmenet are very low. For example in 20 Cr IPO, Retail Quota is 10Cr (if 50:50). Min application size is 1Lakh, so approx application is between 850 to 1000. So if you are very luck you will get allotmenet in that 1000. Keep applying, for more details refer BOA document which give clear visibility what is the ratio of allotmenet.

Finally, After 6months regular applying in SME IPO .. I got A megatherm induction IPO..

We also need to judge that whether keeping on applying for SME IPOs for months it would be better to invest the amount in some good stock and get the gains as in bull market all stock gain 20-30% in 6 months
290.9. kumar Feb 17 2024 10:59:12 AM
Thankyou to all
I have applied lot of IPO still am continuously applying ,but am not getting any single allotment, but my North Indian Friend Got more than 5 IPO in last 4 month with good profit.

we also part of India, we also Indian. compare to north India we are paying more tax to central government . SEBI should allot some of share allotment to south state people also.

yes we are Indian
290.10. Saurabh Feb 26 2024 02:51:55 PM
Buddy, I think you''ve lost or common sense.

I hope you are aware with allotment process in IPO. It''s based on luck and use your PAN card only to allot shared not other information like if your male/femalr or North, south, west or North east indian..
290.11. Ravindran J Mar 01 2024 10:37:02 PM
Buddy you are idiot and lost common sence don''t spread rumours it is only luck as it is through lucky draw. Nothing is partiality. Central government doing love to south Indian more than north Indian. Same life a mother love more than a son then another. Don''t do bullish. Go to sebi and ask clarity.
290.12. kumar Mar 07 2024 11:27:53 AM
Mr. Ravindran i am applied almost 60 to 70 IPO since last 8 month but i didn''t get anything , one of my north Indian friend got 5 IPO in same time . i am not blaming any north Indian , compare to south Indian north Indian people is good and great. i am asking to central government only . not to you
